My son is 2 years old, he sleeps at 1:00 Am and wakes up at 11:30 AM naps around 5:00PM I'm trying to stop nap time so He can start sleeping early and waking up early but I don't know how! Please tell me what to do to fix his sleep schedule?

Answer

This is a common question that comes to my clinic and many parents that attend my clinic do have problems with what we call as disrupted rhythm. When we try to change that clock backward and say 9 pm instead of 1 am that cannot be done in just one night or just in 24 hours it happens over a period of time. His circadian rhythm has been tuned to sleep at 1 am. There are certain rules you follow- First of all his bed routine has to be maintained and has to be consistent every time. Secondly, no screens at least 2 to 3hours before bedtime Thirdly try to use a lot of lavender if you are giving him a shower or bath or an essence in his room. Because this is a sleep stimulant. And be consistent with his place of sleep, if he is sleeping in the cot in his room he should remain in the same place and should not be coming onto your bed. Try to move the clock backward one hour every week and that way his waking up time will also move forward.  A child of 2 years of age should have a nap in a day and that should be okay. If you see a doctor who deals in sleep they would use something called melatonin which is a natural sleep hormone to initiate sleep for a child who is trying to adjust his nap time. So half an hour before bedtime, melatonin needs to be given to him on a regular basis to build his new circadian rhythm.
